Soul and Science Singing
As a professional singer and songwriter of multiple genres and a classically trained tenor, I find it distressing to see a constant conflict in the music world.
I call this the Soul and Science conflict.
Soul
On one side you have singers who reject any possibility that the voice is an instrument with physical limitations and affected by the laws of physics. They assume that the - often wonderful - sound they create is purely the result of their own voice and the passion they pour into their performance. As a result many excellent singers don’t appreciate how much potential they have because the sound they produce is not immediately as they would wish it to be. There is no acknowledgment of the place of training and practise to achieve results.
Science
On the other side you have singers who are so enamoured by the possibilities of finding the perfect technique and understanding the physical aspects of their instrument, they do not acknowledge that the voice is intrinsically linked to our emotions and psychology. The result is singers who often feel defeated and inadequate because they are following all the rules and working hard but are still unable to produce an engaging performance.
Soul and Science
I have an enduring passion for teaching singers to embrace both Soul and Science. It is such a joy to see the often life changing results of grasping the miraculous reality of how our bodies and minds work in harmony to create the sounds we hear as music. It is endlessly fascinating to observe how small physical changes to posture and breathing can transform vocal quality. It is deeply moving to see a singer deliver a performance that is uniquely their own and that brings new meaning and significance to a song.
I would love as many people as possible to experience this Soul and Science approach. It is important that it is introduced as early as possible.
Countless times when I took adult choirs I would have folk approach me with a version of the same story. ‘I used to sing when I was a child but a teacher told me I couldn’t sing and I never tried again until now’.
There is a huge responsibility on parents to ensure a child’s voice is not silenced and a lifetime of singing is lost.
